/vp/ what are some Pokemon that you've used who are better then you originally thought they were?

Mine's Crobat. In Ruby, I had a hell of a time beating Maxie's Crobat, giving me the impression that this guy might be worth looking at. After doing a Poison only run of Platinum, it's safe to say that I absolutely love using Crobat and plan to continue using him in X/Y.

Motherfucking Flareon. I recently played through XD for the first time and I didn't feel like training any other Eevee form because without egg moves and Hidden Power, they have even less viable moves than Flareon. Flareon turned out to be an absolute monster Quick Attacks off 130 base Attack got me out of so many sticky situations and Fire Blast did pretty nasty damage with a Helping Hand boost. Flareon may be pretty lacking competitively, but I'm now convinced it's by far the best choice of Eevee form in XD.

Competitively, it's Articuno. I tried it out on a UU team in gen 4 simply because I've always loved its design and it became the staple of a team that earned me the #2 spot on the ladder. I recently got into NU in gen 5 and it's been pretty monstrous on my most successful team so far.

Crobat has been my favorite mon for a while now. I assume most people will always think of it as crap because it was pretty crappy when it came out in gen 2 (that and being evolved from zubat, which is remembered as nothing but annoying pests by most people), but it's actually become pretty good since then.

I have a bunch of those from gen V. Prime example are pretty much all the bug types and a bunch of grass types (Lilligant, Sawsbuck etc)

Torterra. Last starter I tried out in Gen IV. Wasn't expecting it to be shit or anything but he was way better than I thought he was going to be. Wood Hammering and Earthquaking the shit out of everyone.

Mamoswine really surprised me in Soul Silver. Not only did he win me the Elite 4 at a low level, he outright FUCKED Lance's shit. Easily my new favorite Ice type and would be my favorite ground type if Excadrill didn't exist.

That thing has saved my skin dozens of times. It absolutely slaughters gyms and is way stronger than my piece of shit serperior.

Went into gen 4 not knowing what the last evolution of the starters looked like, went for Turtwig first because the idea seemed appealing, Torterra blew me away.

I don't understand why people don't think of crobat as being really good before they use it. These threads seem to open with crobat 90% of the time.

For me, it's Ampharos. I used one on my latest SS run and it wrecked stuff. Even stuff that had the type advantage on it. The Feraligatr I started with was kinda underwhelming, but Ampharos picked up the slack.

I dunno, Crobat doesn't scream anything special. And then you find out he has pretty nice defensive typing for switching in, and annoying shit like taunt/toxic/roost. But then with a band he can make for a nice uturn pivot that can destroy shit with bravebird.

You know I honestly don't get why people go with Crobat in the first place. I tried using one in HeartGold and its speed was really the only thing it had going for it.

But Ampharos however, REALLY surprised me in White 2.

Crobat isn't special. It's just regular good. But people just underestimate it a lot because of Zubat.

Crobat is my favorite pokémon too, and I admit it's absolutely nothing special. Just perfectly usable, which is what people seem to think it's not before trying it.

Anyways, back to the eevees. I remember picking up Colosseum day one as a kid, and thinking Espeon sucked balls because it was always harder to get levels on than umbreon in the game, so it was always underleveled. Then one day, when I was much older and understood pokemon more, I decided to do a run-through with just Espeon, putting my closest bro (Umbreon), in the box the first chance I got. Needless to say, Espeon is amazing XD

I picked up a little Aron because they're adorable.

I trained that mother fucker on nothing but Patrats for twelve hours, feeding it nothing but protein.

It evolves into this awesome dinosaur faced dinosaur.

Then I discover its amazing movepool.

It can learn SURF, to swim in something that KILLS THE SHIT OUT OF IT, for no good reason. It's huge. It SHOULD sink, but instead it just learns Flamethrower and Ice Punch and Head Smash and it has more HP than my tanky Probopass. I neither know nor care what its IVs are. It is infinitely intense.

Not that anon, but in game, I usually don't care about natures, IVs, EVs or even checking stats or whatever. The in game difficulty is easy enough that you don't have to bother with anything at all.
You can easily get through it without even having decent movesets or even a properly balanced team.

Indeed. I'm the Spinda guy from above. That team was Spinda, Corsola, Ledian, Volbeat, Farfetch'd, and Mawile in Black. The whole intention was to make a team of some of the weakest fully evolved Pokemon in the game. I swept Ghetsis with Volbeat.

Shed Skin is so fucking useful it's worth not evolving at 55 as it is, but mono Dragon is also too good to pass up.

Can't think of a solid moveset though, I keep changing my mind between strong physical sweeper and special elemental user (thunderbolt, flamethrower, ice beam, etc)
