Ignoring the ice cream line which is so audaciously stupid that I can't help but like it a little.
Klink is less interesting to look at than magnemite and likely required less thought.
Those pokeball mushroom things are shit, so is voltorb. The thing is I could live with one pokemon that looked like a pokeball, it's stupid but the mushrooms are both stupid AND derivative.
An argument I think is yet more convincing is that the best of Gen I are better than the best of Gen V. I like Haxorus, Zoroark and various others but not nearly as much as I like Blastoise and Marowak.
I'd rather play a Gen V game than a Gen I one but I do think arguments about Gen V being poorer than average in terms of pokemon design are pretty valid.
