>>12801473It's not that the digital colors are inherently bad by being digital, it's more of the direction the current background artists are taking.
I grant you that the old style did do some things better -- like softer, wispier airbrushed clouds instead of plasticky looking cumulus clouds all the goddamn time (except for that one odd looking one in Charizard vs. Blastoise) or some sky colors being a bit more subtle (though this can be done digitally, the colorist is more at fault in this case), faded background objects in the distance and yes trees and bushes are easier on the eyes stylistically.
There are points where the digital style does hold its own though, buildings, ground textures, rocks and effects such as fire or the distortion effect of Golbat's Supersonic.
I grant you some color choices are questionable, the models of Pokémon are granted less subtlety (likely from higher up) than back then and they go crazy with the highlights at times but do keep in mind, there's a good chance a lot of the staff from back then either isn't involved with the current anime (not surprising, the anime industry has a high turnover rate) or they're likely going by the book with color choices -- believe it or not, there's this broadcast standard about "legal" colors and it's possible that some aspects of the older style used colors that bleed on certain TV sets too easily.
The series might not be what we grew up with, but that doesn't mean kids today are getting short-changed.
