A lot of people brought FR/LG just for the updated graphics, understandable if a little lacking in the reasons department.
This then gave Nintendo the idea for HG/SS, allowing one's first slot Pokemon to follow you around, good, and different enough for people to want to get it, the PokeWalker was an added interesting bonus.
Now, Black and White had a sequel, first in the line of the mainstream Pokemon Games, one would think they'd do just as well as FR/LG and HG/SS, but they did better, far better, set two years in the future, running off the back of events that happened in the original Black and White, this seem to also renew a lot of peoples faith in the franchise.
Taking all of that into account, the smart thing Game Freak can do is release a direct sequel to Ruby and Sapphire, it proved that it worked far better then direct ports with Black and White, I can see it working in spades for Ruby and Sapphire.
