1. Adapt one of the games loosely but only enough so it's interesting.
2. Make it multiple perspective, so it doesn't just focus on a travel group. This allows the series to not just favor one playable character. Also, a Gym Leader or two might have a central part of the story without being a travel buddy all season.
3. The focus on Pokémon would allow maybe one Mascot but not to the point of mindless spotlight sucking fluff. More emphasis on battles
4. Make the evil team a real threat, no more Wile E. Coyote schemes.
5. Less character of the day driven plots, more fleshing the world out with a bit of depth as the later games intended.
