Smogon is the leading English language competitive pokemon group/site. If you don't want to follow their "rules", you don't have to, play with your friends and do what you want.
Aside from that, Smogon is useful and it teaches a player what the most commonly used movesets are for pokemon in competitive battling, giving plays idea on how to use a pokemon effectively, as well as providing a battling environment that is considered balanced.
I will never get why anyone gets upset about how a group of people choose to play a game.
