I really fail to see how it's overdesigned, either. Some of the toned down designs look too damn boring as it is. Overdesigned would be giving it an actual tuxedo.

I've already noted that you could exclude features from all designs.
Pidgeot doesn't need its crest.
Blaziken doesn't need all the different colours in its design.
Serperior doesn't need all those patterns.
Empoleon doesn't need the bladed wings - a crown would suffice.
Lugia doesn't need any body parts that are black.
Murkrow itself could do without the hat.
