You can't really gauge "strength" in a Pokemon game. Everyone protagonist presumably hits level 100 and catches all legendaries in their game, but there's no indication of how good they are at battle strategy by then. PWT is the closest thing we have to measure that.

This thread seems related to something I've been wondering for a while.

How does the title of Champion actually work in these games? In the first gen games Blue becomes the champion, and then Red immediately beats him and becomes the new champion. Yet in the second gen, Lance is the champion. Is there a split between the Johto and Kanto League Champion title, even though they share the same League headquarters and even members of the E4? Or is there an official League Champion (in this case Lance) that you beat in order to become a "champion". Though that wouldn't explain how Blue became the Champion in the first gen. In the same respect, I am equally confused as to how Iris became Champion in BW2. Even though you beat the E4 and N, Alder is still in charge and passes everything on to Iris?

tl;dr - How does becoming a Champion even work?

I'm pretty sure you don't even have to encounter the tao trio again after beating the fusion in that one battle, which you can't catch them.

Makes them pretty powerful in my book considering the others just defeated theirs. (Well, in Gens 1, 3, and 4 at least)

I assumed you could choose the title of Champion after defeat of the old Champion and Red had decided to give it up immediately, but Blue gave his up later. The task of beating the eight gyms and the E4 seems to actually be hard and rigorous to anyone who isn't determined to do so. I see it like competing in the Olympics, sure some people have great talent, but not all of them live each day honing their skill to reach that goal.
My other theory is that Blue's championship should simply be ignored. Tajiri never expected anything after G/S and kinda lost rule of their universe at that point. Masuda instead had to make sense of everything, keeping the old rules, but making E4 positions like Gym positions and decided by the current Champion.

Caps lock rage aside, each game is canon in their entirety, except when remakes retcon certain portions of them. They're all just canon to each other in varying degrees. In RBY, it IS canon that Red caught Mewtwo. In GSC, it IS ALSO canon that he did NOT. However, it is canon that Red beat the Pokemon League in RBY, GSC, and BW2.

actually, GSC is in the same universe as RBY because Red defeated Team Rocket. Either Black or White are in that same universe, since the Team Rocket guy decides to go back to his country shows up in Unova with a family. RSE and DPPt I have no idea though.

DPPt takes place in the same universe because Cynthia mentions having met someone who took on Giratina and the fact that Caitlin exists. RSE is in the same universe because a Plasma grunt in BW refers to Team Magma/Aqua (can't remember which), plus the former members of Team Aqua/Magma that got married and moved to Unova before B/W2.

In one universe, RSE's events with the Weather Trio never happened and they were caught by May (or Brendan, if you're not female masterrace). But that doesn't mean that there's no Brendan/May in the HGSS universe. That said, each game might have parts that are canon with some others, but are otherwise in a group of relatively parallel, similar universes.

Are you talking about between RBY and GSC with the time capsule? The pokemon universe(s) all have the ability to travel between one another in some form or fashion, and they oftentimes make little note of it. The Blitzle dialogue in Oppelucid is the confirming piece about seperate universes, but it is also demonstrated in the Entralink, which can be used to travel to the other version, thus the other universe. But pokemon aren't described as being traded from other universes simply because it is apparently a given with each inter-player trade. There are a lot of givens that just aren't stated.

He doesn't, because his stupid theory prevents any sort of evidence of the sort, because every game magically becomes its own entity which in turn makes it impossible to validate the canonicity of any events, making it so that there's no sequel games to confirm anything.

Secondly, because if what is considered "canon" is "what the story forces you to do to advance to the credits," then I recognize that there's no merit in the argument. However, to some, "canon" more implies "what is the maximum possible extent of achievement in the game."

The Blitzle dialogue in Oppelucid opens up the second definition to plausibility. So it's more of just what the fans want to think. Especially since it's not the first time a Nintendo IP has done something in the vein of multiple universes (Zelda, I'm looking at you)

Neither of those is what canon is, and nobody but you thinks like that. Canon is the confirmed sequence of events that makes up the timeline of a piece of media, and without a sequel game to confirm what is and isn't "canon" to any given work (the biggest case of that happening being with Red's team), then you have absolutely nothing backing your argument up - you can't say what Red did and didn't do, because you have nothing beyond the original RB to tell you so beyond your own ravings you pull out of your ass.

So are you saying that every game that has a what if scenario, despite telling you outright that it isn't canon, is canon?

Zelda exists in different timelines, not different universes.

But here's the thing, what if something happened before BW that results in two timelines? Everything before is in the same universe, but somehow in one timeline (White) Team Plasma started its activities earlier while in the other (Black) they took longer to act.

Red is the only MC in canon to take down a evil team by himself, with no help what so ever.

May takes on 2 evil teams at once.

Lucas fights and beats Giratina (who's up there with the other god Pokemon).

Hilbert is the only MC to canonically catch a legendary Pokemon (in my head canon he's the truth to N's ideals, so he got Reshiram).

Hilbert likely could take Lucas at the very least.
