Personally, I would love to see a Junk type. The Pokemon are based off discarded/inanimate objects in the real world. You could retype Trubbish/Garbodor, and add dual typing to lo Timburr/Gurdurr/Conkeldurr etc. It'd be more of an excuse for the less animal-looking Pokemon.

Pixie was entirely meant as a joke, as I was thinking of alternate names that could have been used in place of fairy.
Hero is one that was also meant as a joke, though the more I think about it, and fairy, the more plausible that it seems that something along those lines could be made.

Complexity vs. Function and Balance
A game with 5 types would be simpler than 17/18+, but if the types aren't balanced in the 5, the easiest (least complex) solution may be to add a 6th (or 7th, 8th, etc.) to help balance the other 5. In the case of Pokemon, there are imbalances. Though the system may be complex, it is simpler to fix it by adding another type....for now. Going down the line more generations is likely to change that, but for the moment it is likely still easier for them to add one or two types than to figure out a way to force the current ones to be balanced.

Actually, as evidenced by the new typing of Pokemon across all generations, there were plenty of Pokemon that were viable for it. I always imagined Love-type, though, due to Cute Charm and Attract. Never thought they would do it, but there was always room.

Dialga and Celebi are time-themed legendaries, but having a ton of Pokemon walking around with the ability to manipulate time would be a bad idea story-wise. I think a move that did damage before you attacked would be cool for a Time type, but that would be unworkable; lots of other moves already exist which use or mimic time-based effects, like Perish Song (use now, kill later), so Time would be boring.

There are a lot of sound related moves and quite a few sound related pokemon.

Perhaps they have some kind of long term plan, adding in sound pokemon but keeping them as normal types, until there are enough to bring in a new type. Just like fairy changed old pokemon types to prevent there only being the handful added by the new gen. So all these sound based pokemon are being added in preparation, to boost the number of sound types once the type is actually added.

Why do people seem to think Zombies and ghosts are the same thing all of a sudden?

A ghost is a disembodied conciousness capeable of thought and reasoning but with no physical form.

A zombie is a reanimated corpse devoid of a soul incapable of thought save for the animalistic desire to feed. Physical form is all it has.

A zombie is the polar opposite of a ghost when it comes to the undead. Were there any zombies in pokemon under the present types they would certainly not be classed as ghosts, but as dark types.

Learn the difference, come the zombie apocalypse it could save your life!

Assuming you meant "perfect", can you explain exactly what would change for that split? What difference does it make, gameplay wise? The differences between a sea creature and a river creature are assuredly not as great as those between a sea creature and a mountain-climbing creature, and the minute details can't properly be explored in a 2-sentence blurb and a 96x96 gif/low-poly cel-shaded model.

The best they can do is put sea Pokemon in the sea and river Pokemon in the river, and for the most part they already do that.

But seriously there are a LOT of water or part water types because of water routes and fishing needing variety so a sat water and fresh water type split would be a good idea.

I actually think that a fungi and plant split of grass type would be a good idea in the future too even tough you were being sarcastic

Sound type is a pretty solid thing to add.
Strong to fighting (cause sounds can make fighters lose focus/balance.
Weak against poison because being poisoned affects your voice.
Already that balances the gameplay quite a bit.
Ghosts immune to it cause sound doesn't really affect them.
Super effective against ground cause high frequency sounds can destroy burrows (I THINK).
Adding another weakness to ground always helps. Ghosts can use another boost imo.
Optional:
Water types resist it cause sounds have more resistance.
Flying types are weak to it (high frequency devices are used to scare away birds).
I'm hesitant about these two though..

The fresh water/sea water thing could work if they are both weak to each other (what with fresh water fish being unable to be in salt water and vice versa).
The BIG problem would be typing the water moves. Surf a sea water type? What to make of scald?
But out of this greatness could come.

For instance, magikarp (common at lakes) transforming into a gyarados and gaining a secondary sea water typing (keeping the x4 weakness to lightning) would make more sense than the flying typing it has.
And the idea of turning from a fresh water to a fres+salt water type is really good. Same with goldeen and seaking.

The abundance of water types makes this quite good too, as water types would have a new enemy, themselves, neutralizing the type advantage they have (there clearly is).

Optionally, sea water could not be weak to grass types, seeing how the salt would screw them up, but leverage it with some other thing.

I'd say up to 20 would be good, or at least around in there. What GF really needs to do is go back and re-balance the whole system. Too may types that are currently worthless, while others are way too powerful.

Natures added individuality to Pokémon, and most Pokémon have a nature gives the most benefits for battling.
Abilities added individuality to Pokémon species, GameFreak also used abilities to add a third "type" as in the case of levitate.

So I imagine a new mechanic to be something like "affinities".
Pokémon may have an affinity to a type that is not their own, assuming some of the characteristics of that type:
A small STAB-like multiplier, but also additional multipliers for weakness and resistance; they will also tend to be able to learn TMs of their affinity.

Affinity may even be something that can be changed by training Pokémon in certain environments (train it inside the volcano area, gains affinity to fire and loses default affinity...).
