Digimon, Yu-Gi-Oh, Beyblade and shows like it all tried to switch their protagonists up, and none of them could keep up the stellar ratings of the original. Pokemon thought "We're NOT going to do what they did" and it worked. They're still on, doing great. Why take a risk now, when you've got so much more data it will not work?
