Actually Ho-oh and Lugia represent the sun and moon, and the Legendary birds represent wildfires, lightning storms and blizzards, and Entei represents volcanos, Raikou represents rain, and Suicune represents purification of water. I can see the merit of a handful of Gen 4 and 5 legends like Victini, Meloetta, Shaymin-S or Darkrai and there were tons of worthwhile pokemon in Gen 5 and maybe 4 I guess if you're into that; but how could anyone defend Cube?

So the anti-genwunner mentality has gotten so out of control that we are now arguing that the robotic legendaries from post-gen 2 aren't complete shit?

I mean, I like what they represent and all that, I'm not going to run around saying that Palkia is just a big purple dick and Mewtwo is just sooo cool, but I really don't see HOW the new legends are supposed to represent what they do. When pressed to design a Pokemon that controls time distortion, how the fuck do you come up with a big blue giraffe with metal spikes? There's no actual intelligent design there, it's just random lines, gems and metals to make it look cool and appeal to the kids who buy games based off the boxart. I would legitimately prefer a return to a legendary Pokemon that actually looks like a living, breathing thing. I like Xerneas in theory, but the fact that he looks like fucking papercraft with toothpick horns means I'm probably never going to use him lest he stick out on my team like a sore thumb.

That's mainly for the version legendaries though. Gen 5 had some really ballin' designs with the muskateers, Victini, Shaymin, and things like Genesect, Deoxys and the Regi's work because they seem like they SHOULD look unnatural and synthetic.

I'm going to be disregarded as a genwunner though.

I don't think you're a genwunner. But I actually really like the designs of Dialga and Palkia. Just because it doesn't look like a giant clock or a big blank space doesn't mean it can't control those things. They're old, powerful dragons. Same with Kyurem, Reshiram, and Zekrom. I imagine almost all of the early Pokemon were dragons and birds.

I don't see the problem with them. Legendaries in generation one are basically hidden bosses. They don't tie into the plot and, with the exception of Mewtwo, seem more like powerful and rare creatures than gods. Legendary, but on the more mundane sound of legendary.

The more bizarre designs of the new legendaries are a natural outcome of trying to tie them into the plot, or just trying to come up with something new. There's only so many times you could do something like Moltres, Articuno, or Zapdos before it got stale. Fenghuangs and hoous (or ho-oh, however you want to write it) are associated with the sun, but they don't represent it. Ho-oh is just the Pokemon version of the Japanese phoenix. You make some good points, and it makes sense in a way that the newer legendaries follow this pattern as they come to represent more primal forces like the creation of land and sea over "flaming bird" and "flaming dog", but the actual designs still seem so insubstantial. They don't even look particularly dragon-like,, like their abilities weren't taken into consideration at all when they were designed. You couldn't even guess that Palkia was part water type if you looked at it. I wouldn't have assumed either of them were dragons, either.

I probably would have done something clock-related if I had designed Dialga though. Maybe make it part psychic and give it an orbiting ring of stones or something that rotate around his neck to the rhythm of a clock. And lose the edgy metal bits.

I don't really like the idea of clock-related stuff in Dialga's design. Yeah, clocks are a shorthand way of showing time, but the complete lack of them kind of makes Dialga seem more...primal, I guess? This is a creature that long predates humans and is the ruler of an abstract concept.

Mind you, I don't really like Dialga and Palkia's designs either. Maybe something that evokes the image of a clock without really looking like a clock could've worked, like how Zekrom and Reshiram's tails look like different engines.

There's nothing wrong with simpler stories and there's also nothing wrong with the more complex stories of more recent games. However, given all the stuff about godly legendaries, I wouldn't mind a return to the roots. I'd be fine if Yveltal and Xerneas didn't have much to do with the overarching plot, like Lugia and Ho-oh.

This is coming from someone who enjoyed all of the stories. Except Diamond and Pearl. Platinum was good.

Blastoise, the shellfish pokemon, sea animals in nature that use jet propulsion and have funnels incorporated in their shells. It's actually really clever what they did with blastoise. Especially with it being inside a tortoise shell making it a sort of heavy artillery pokemon. I'm fine with genesect though because scientists put that gun on him.

Gen 5 had the worst legendaries in my opinion. The kami trio looks terrible. The musketeers looked like something I would draw up if I was 8 years old. Kyurem and his forms just look bad. Resh, Zek and Genesect are all cool though.

Gen 6 so far is really impressing me with its good legendary design.

I do think Zekrom has some flaws, but I think the whole turbine tail was really well done and was a unique take on an electric type legendary instead of just sticking lightning bolts all over him.

Are you fucking kidding me? Ho-oh is called the rainbow Pokemon because fenghuangs (and their Japanese counterpart the hoou or ho-oh) were rainbow-colored.

Fenghuangs are associated with the sun, but that doesn't mean Ho-oh doesn't have to represent the sun or any BS like that. Pokemon is not subtle about these things. Volcarona has a stronger tie to the sun than Ho-oh.

Do not even make that excuse. If they wanted to make Ho-oh a sun representation, it would've been easy. Slap that in its dex, or put some sun iconography in the tower, or have multiple images silhouetting Ho-oh against the sun and Lugia against the moon.

Pokemon has mixed mythologies before. There has been subtlety in Pokemon before, but the designs are rarely subtle. Look at Volcarona, which is called the sun Pokemon and has myths of it replacing the sun in desperate times. Look at Cresselia and Darkrai, which are linked to the full+crescent moons and new moons respectively. Ho-oh does not have anything linking it to the sun beyond generic shit.

There's a wide gap between subtlety and pulling things out of your ass.
