So what Gen 1-3 Pokemon benefited the most from the physical/special split? Which got hit the hardest? Which got huge turnarounds as newer moves were introduced in the newer gens?

Alakazam got hit really hard back then. In Gen 1 and 2 Fire, Thunder, and Ice Punch were special but in gen 3 became physical and that screwed him over. Hitmochan though in that regard got a buff since he could benefit from the elemental punches.

Sneasel (and Weavile, if the spit wouldn't have happened) have benefited enormously. Their both STAB war special, but their SpAtk is 35/45, whereas their Atk is 95/120.

Sceptile lost its signature move leaf blade, since it has a higher SpAtk than Atk.

Banette would also have had it better if shadow ball would still be a physical attack.

It happened in Gen IV.

Gyarados got a huge boost, Dragonite did. Almost all of the Dark types (Absol especially). Ho-Oh, Hitmonchan...

But i do miss being able to give Abra the elemental punches and having instant power house.

I remember the nostalgiafags went completely fucking insane. Apparently depriving Alakazam of the punches was done deliberately to make gen1 Pokémon less good, according to them. It was on the scale of fairygate

His best moves are all physical, despite having a higher special attack.

Not to mention, he lost his subseeding crown in Gen 4.

If it had been around prior to Gen IV, I'd say that Togekiss would be screwed: Air Slash, Shadow Ball and Aura Sphere would be physical.
