The Pokeball sinks. If the Onix somehow manages to escape or the ball breaks, it'd probably be in extreme pain and burrow to be dry.

well you forget that pokemon are in a state of stasis whilst in the pokeball, like with the ninetails that lived for what was it 100-500 years somewhere in the span from being inside the pokeball

Assuming the pokeball is some sort of machine keeping the mon inside alive (while being in said state of stasis), it would eventually run out of power or get destroyed over time, killing its dormant inhabitant. Maybe "killing" isn't the exact term, since the Pokemon is just some cluster of data in there, but its life would end nonetheless.

I thought Pokemon were stored as light, not data. That's why there are mirrors on the inside, and the red/white beams as they are shot out are the light materializing. Therefore, if the ball breaks, they should be released rather than destroyed. That's how the can escape Pokeballs and when they resist capture, instead of dying because they broke the ball they were inside of.

Different anon here - I think the power of the balls comes from the apricorns. Remember they used those before balls existed, and Kurt makes them from them. If animals in this world are magical, why can't fruit/plants be the same?

So Pokéballs are apricorts covered in metal for better durability.

Remember that plot point in the anime they've only acknowledged like twice where Ash and Gary both caught the same Pokeball at the same time while fishing and it broke?

Yup. And Silph Co. adapted it to make Pokeballs available on a large scale (only skilled artisans like Kurt could make Apricorn balls) and made them easier to carry by making them shrink/attach to belts

Here's what I never got about that, what kind of device made 400-700 years ago has the capabilities to turning animals into data/light? I'm guessing back in those days, it had to have been magical in nature and Silph/Devon managed to recreate it with science
