Depends what is it. Some don't matter, like the Eeveevolution tree, but some matter entirely - Machamp and any blatantly non-female Pokemon HAS to be a male, also if the gender makes it look worse (ie, smaller proportions for females) then I'll pick the male. Some females are an exception, like Vileplume or Venusaur who (imo) look better female.
