DP are not even half as slow as some people make it seem to be. No it wont take 50 hours to reach Elite 4. No it doesn't take 10 minutes to go from Sandgen town to that Transfer thing. No it doesn't take 20 minutes to kill a Bidoof

Slowest battles of any portable game, best region with lots of varied environments and a ton of cool pokemon.

As hinted at in previous replies though the type distribution isn't all that good, with the Ponyta line being literally the only fire-type available outside of the starters.

Most of the gym leaders are pretty great, the elite four is forgettable but Cynthia is one of the best champion fights in the entire series.

Overall it really is an excellent game other than the speed issues, enjoy it OP.

Pokemon Pearl was in fact my first hand held game. I can say that it has a great story. by far the most in-depth storyline until platinum. The game focuses on incorporating old Pokemon and giving them a new look through new evolutions and baby preevolutions. The region also has one of the top favorite evil syndicates. The number one feature is the introduction of the physical special split, which gives many new dimensions to battle strategy. since it's release, i have played a main series game from every region, and I can say that you won't be disappointed. by the way, my first game was XD, so I had no clue about the whole region and generation thing until Platinum. I really don't have a favorite region per say.

As much as I like the D/P/PT games, he is right. The 4th generation was one of the worst ones when looking at the Pokemon fandom. It was at this point where there were more people dropping being a fan of the games, and there less people getting into it.

I feel the same way. I picked Turtwig as my starter in Plat (having not slayed since Silver), and it took a good few weeks for me to get through the main story. E4 and gym leaders were far stronger then I ever expected them to be, and that fuckin' mountain was a major pain in the ass when the story decided to derail the progress.

It makes me wonder what the fuck I'm thinking trying to Nuzlocke it.

As far as D/P goes, I liked them despite their flaws.

As far as what you are about to get into,

>Gym Leader and Elite Four respectively based on the aforementioned types

DP has several problems that were fixed in Platinum, so I suggest getting that as the definitive gen 4 experience. DP has slow battle animations and surf speed, a dex that's lacking in type diversity, and most of the new evos of old pokemon aren't available pre-E4, if at all. Pearl is still a solid pokemon game, Platinum just outdoes it in many, many areas.

I got into the franchise with this version, but looking back on it, I'd pretty much only bother with it as a slave file at this point, and that's not worth actually spending money on.

If you want to do a run through Sinnoh, go Platinum or go home.

I DID go back through RSE there were no problems with the trainer or wild pokemon (outside of the water routes) levels

It was a terrible story because it was essentially the same thing as the first game just with a less competent Team Rocket and no Giovanni.

Every story afterward the first two gens is just renaming the bad guys and changing the scale of their plan up a tad. N would be a shallow and cliched character in nearly any piece of fiction aside from Pokemon and other children franchises, yet he's the most complex character this series has seen yet.
