Nothing, aside from leaving out the arc where 18 gets some action off the battlefield, it did everything right.
I can't think of anything else that would have "ruined" dragonball in the eyes of a nostalgiafag though. GT was sanctioned and directed by Akira Toriyama I'm fairly sure, and though it sucked it was still airing when a good chunk of the college age Pokemon fans were kids.

Pokemon is super popular, even the old pokes get attention from the new kids. Also the designs are always up and down from start to now. I felt plenty of Gen 1 pokemon were pretty meh, even when I played Blue as a kid. It's the same today.
