I'm new to PTCG online and I have some questions I'd hope some of you guys could answer.

1. I have the basic red, blue, green, yellow, orange and power relay decks. Are these all the free decks you can get at the moment? Want to make sure I'm not missing anything.

2. Are there any other promotional codes that can be used by anyone that I should know about?

3. Is it possible to play this game casually just using the packs you get for free from the daily login and the trainer challenge?

4. Is there a limit to how many cards you can trade for another card? Or something that they need to have the same value? I saw that something like this was the case for public trades, but is private trade the same?

5. What do people do with all the dozens of duplicates that they get of cards that aren't really worth anything? Do people use them as trade fodder or just let them rot in their collection or are there some nice guys that also help newbies out to get started. If they help newbies out, where would it be possible to find guys like these?

6. How much would it cost to create a good (cheap) deck for a beginner? What would be a good deck for a beginner and what packs would I need to buy for it?

7. Is it better to buy packs and open them or should you just buy the most wanted packs and trade those directly for the cards you need?

8. What are some reliable places to buy card codes? I don't buy physical packs since I don't collect them physically and no one in my area that I know really plays the tcg.

I also got 3 booster codes from a friend that bought those packs and didn't intent to play the online game, but I don't believe any of the cards seem to be worth much. Could anyone take a look if there is anything useful in there?

Not in multiplayer. Singleplayer isn't worth it. Buy codes online, they're cheap as hell.

When you're starting out, buying and opening packs is better, usually. Gives you some staples and a little trade bait. Once you get your collection established, then you want to use packs for trade.

This would be a better question for people on later, I really have no idea. All my friends give me their codes so it's not something I've investigated.

5. Usually nobody wants those cards as they are common and useless. If for some reason you want them, I wouldn't mind giving them away for free.

6/7. I'd say trade your first few packs for the staple trainers. Cards like Catcher, Ultra Ball, etc that can be played in pretty much every deck. Make sure you don't get more than you need after having opened all the free decks. After that, do whatever you want. If you want to play a specific deck, trade packs for its cards. If not, just open packs. If you're on a budget and pull FA's or shinies from packs, you can always trade them for their cheaper version plus more packs.

8. If you don't mind going through auctions to get good deals, eBay. Always ask the seller if they message the codes or ship the code cards if they don't specify. Also, check out the trading/selling sections in Pokegym and the HeyFonte facebook groups, people sell codes there for better prices. If there's a league near you, you can always kindly ask people who don't play the online game to give you their codes.

From someone who hasn't played the trading card game in a long time, how do you play it IRL? I know the rules and the basic gameplay, but how is it actually played? Is it like Yu-Gi-Oh and Duel Masters where you call everything out, or are you able to play it pretty silently with only a few words said?

Does changing the difficulty actually change anything? I played through the trainer challenge on expert in order to grind those free packs and the AI was still ridiculously bad and exploitable. Basically, if you draw into your evolutions fast, you'll win, if not, you'll lose.

Another question about IRL dueling. If you beat your opponent, do you still get to take their prizes as a reward for winning, or was that not a real rule and I was being duped?

If that person claimed that those were official rules, then you definitely got tricked or he didn't know the rules himself.

But if it is just between friends or whatever, you can use custom rules if you both agree of course.

Considering Japan gets a set every 3-4 months, I'd expect them to be "out" around the time XY comes out.

If TPCi is still sticking to their current release schedule, we won't see it in the states until next Spring, probably.

Too many Pokemon. Not enough Trainers. Way too many energy.

Trainers are usually the main engine of the deck and usually make up the majority of the deck. Usually around 3/5 of the deck.

Supporters are your main draw engine and you generally run at least 12 to 15 of them. Some Supporters like Skyla and Shadow Triad are used to fetch rather than the raw draw power of cards like Juniper and N.

Pokemon, while your main source of generating damage and taking prizes, aren't needed in such numbers. Most decks that run strictly basics (Darkrai, Big Basics, Team Plasma, etc) run around 9 to 11. Evolution decks tend to run 13 to 15 with some exceptions (Gothitelle/Accelgor) running upwards of 20.

Stage 2 Evolution decks (Klinklang, Blastoise, etc) also need to make space to devote 4 slots to the Item card, Rare Candy. This Item lets you skip the Stage 1 completely and lets you just drop them from your list most of the time.

Energy is usually run at between 10 (Darkrai) and 15 (Blastoise).

Start racking up those free packs from the Trainer Challenge, redeem those free theme deck codes (IIRC, typing in 'dragonsexalted' and 'boundariescrossed' gets you free decks with decent amounts of shit in them. They can be redeemed multiple times), or start buying booster pack codes from online sellers.

A lot of players tend to see those booster packs as bartering pieces in the trade section so you could find the right cards that way if you're willing to actually spend money on this thing. In that case I'd probably just play IRL, if I were you.

If you do want to play competitive for free, the closest thing to Dueling Network I think I've seen you in the /dng/, right? is playtcg. You'll need to make an accound on bebessearch to do so though.

I am from DNG. Only reason I started playing this was because me and a friend went to walmart the other night for some alcohol and we andered into the nerd section and ended up buying the Leafeon and the Glaceon decks.

I noticed the code things and decided to try the online thing out.

Everytime you reach 30000 points on an opponent, you get a pack. You get 3 extra packs for reaching 30000 on everyone in a league. 45 packs total. Be sure to beat them with the 3 basic decks too so you can get those cards as well. Play on expert for faster point farming.

This will also give you a few hundred tokens which you can use to buy packs/cards once they implement that. They're useless now, but start stocking up.

I think you have to click expert everytime you want to battle someone for it to work.

Dark Explorers Accelgor, the one with Deck and Cover. The point is to use Deck and Cover with Mew EX (or Accelgor if needed) and then send in Gothitelle to lock trainers so that they can't play Switch to get out of the paralysis. Dusknoir manipulates damae counters so that they are KO'd by poison coming into your turn so that the lock never breaks.

The only reason I don't like it is because it's a direct copy of a deck from last year's format. I just don't like seeing the exact same decks with different cards. No other problems with it, it's a pretty good deck actually.

My line has been 4 Virizion EX, 3 Genesect EX, 2 Virizion NVI, 2 Bouffalant DRX. Only pain in the ass is starting Bouffalant or Genesect. Other than that, it's really consistent getting off the T2 Megalo Cannon with Plasma Badge on Virizion EX. Definitely needs at least two Shadow Triad to get G Booster back, also a couple of Energy Retrieval wouldn't go amiss.

Probably not that many people. It can be picked off really easily with Genesect + Laser, Genesect + Deoxys, G-Booster, even Virizion NVI + LaserBank can take it in one. It needs to set itself up in two turns, during which it could easily be KO'd and that's two prizes gone.

thanks for the input anyway

and there's enough players in the theme deck queue to get matches, at least in summer, out of summer they are not that common but you can find them sometimes,
as that is the only format i play as i can't afford investing lots of money in the game, actually i stopped buying when the ex came out and sometimes i buy theme decks to
have some fun at the online game.
