Getting into Pokemon Showdown again, are there any essential guides to understanding all the strategy that goes into teambuilding/battling?

I've read most of the beginner guides on Smogon and understand a good amount about all the customizing of your party pokemon (EVs/moves/items/etc) but I still feel I'm pretty novice, and get my ass handed to me often.

I haven't seen a good guide really. Choosing a moveset isn't rocket science, but making it fit into your team, can be. Slapping 6 random overpowered Pokemon into one team never works.

You can put six dragons with Outrages and some fire and focus blasts and you can easily climb up the ladder to a decent level.

I recommend asking someone who made a good team some questions, such as how did he start making it, etc...If you can find such a person, anyway.

I usually just try my best to pick pokemon/moves that counter a wide range of types. For example I'll have a firetype pokemon, and I know it's weak against water, so I'll maybe give it an electric or grass type move if I can.

I still manage to get my ass handed to me on a regular basis though
I guess I'm not sure what else I should be considering other than X type is strong against Y type or whathaveyou

Lol, can you believe that that is how I actually achieved my highest rating? (2094). For some reason I haven't encountered any Cloysters during that run. It was during the time Smogon was down, though. That kind of thing won't work against good players.

I've made a full choice mono-dragon team that reached #1 on the ladder. There are plenty of scrubs on the ladder, but the problem with gen 5 is that anybody who does not play offense and/or Drizzle is playing with a self-imposed handicap. It is entirely possible this gen to make spam teams that wipe the floor with good players.

I'd be interested in seeing that team, or some replays, if you have them. How did you avoid getting smashed by Mamoswine or Weavile, and especially Cloyster? Or even opposing Scarfed Dragons? I used Rain Dance Kingdra to outspeed them, but on a full choice team, I can't imagine how to deal with that.

Mamoswine wasn't too much of a problem, as I had three pokemon that could outspeed and survive one Ice Shard. Kyu-B (honestly this should be banned) also helped immensely of course. Admittedly though, Weavile on the rare occasions it appeared was a big problem. Cloyster and opposing scarfed dragons were outsped by scarf non-HP fire Latios, and in honesty Cloyster is mostly used by some pretty bad players so that helped. I love Rain Dance Kingdra, but if you're running a mono-dragon team then Scarf Latios is a requirement, I think.

You're probably the only person besides me who thinks that here. When I raised that topic I mentioned that a CB Kyurem-B OHKOes pretty much every non-steel type, and 2HKOes all but the most defensive steels, but people didn't seem to think it matters. Right now I use a Tailwind team with Kyu-B as the main destroyer, and does he destroy! So now I have proof of what I've said before (before using it). People that think Scizor or Breloom will protect them from destruction would be disappointed. He easily survives their priorities.
