The other option is them showing their wings. It's supposed to have small wings under its plumage.

Because the battles are animated a lot more now. We also saw an actual sky battle and you saw both pokemon flying.

But that's wrong.
Certain flying types will not be able to participate, probably including things like Doduo/Dodrio, Gyarados, and Mantine

Fly, the move, is a battle technique and something that allows you to ride your poke and go flying around. That doesn't mean they can't fly. I guess Gyarados don't like being ridden.

That still fails to answer anon's question. If, as >>12910090 suggested, Fly was the battle technique as well as the teaching to allow an animal to be mounted and flown, and that Gyrados can't learn Fly because it can't be ridden - then why can it leanr Surf, which also requires being ridden?

Yeah, but anon was hypothesizing that Gyrados was capable of flying, it just didn't learn Fly because it was hard/impossible to ride. Second anon wanted to know why the same logic applied to Surf, which the post you linked to failed to address.

That said, yeah, Gyrados can't fly because it's way to large and doesn't have bullshit mystical powers to let it do so.

Gyarados thrives on swimming, its basically built for it being a sea dragon and therefore, allowing a kid to ride it while it swims is fine for Gyarados.

On the other hand, it's not as built for flying. Maybe it can hover a bit above the ground when it's not in water to avoid earthquakes or something, but it doesn't want to do that for a kid halfway across a nation.

But one anon said "Gyrados can fly, but can't be ridden - that's why it can't learnt Fl?". Anon two then accepted the notion that Gyrados could fly, and instead chose to question the logic behind the second point, since that's where the biggest logical flaw was. The post you pointed out failed to address that question.

Gyarados can fly, but he's either not good enough at flying or too angry to carry people in the air. In the water he has no problems cause he's a skilled swimmer. And of course he's the king of the waterfalls, so he's always proud to carry you over one.
In any case Fly is a technique, never an indicative of being able to fly. Notice how only 2 pokemons learn it by leveling up...

Fly is a bullshit move anyway. No small pokemon should be allowed to learn it.

Actually it makes sense, seeing as these pokemon are supposed to be known for their speed, and are based on one of the fastest land animals, so they fly by just moving their feet really fast.

Well, it makes sense for a cartoon anyway..
