It was normal for a fantasy game to have the hero character literally be named "Hero," along with other classes being referred to only as such.
Rockman used the naming scheme of music terms for Rock/Roll/Blues/etc.
Dragon Ball named almost every character after random objects/food/clothes, while Goku himself had his name directly taken from Sun Wukong.
Pokemon established a color-based naming pattern for itself, and acted accordingly.
I could go on in how names weren't exactly inspired during this segment of time for them; or rather, the Japanese just really, really, like to play around with names.
