Well any DS that has both a GBA and a DS port, I think it's the original and the lite that has both?

Desmume supports transfer option. You can load up a GBA rom under options and then launch a DS rom.

The only thing I could suggest is to generate a copy of it with pokegen and transfer it over

If you have two consoles, you can put the rom with the save in a flashcard and then trade with yourself.

What do you call a "normal" DS?

You can do it with original (aka "fat") and the Lite. DSi and DSi XL won't work.
