There's also Dragon Quest Monsters that's been around since GB all the way to 3DS and has always had backwards compatibility with older games. Features around 600+ mon, but if I'm not mistaken they're all created by 1 person.
There's also Youkai Watch (if I remember correctly) Made by Level-5, it's a monster/spirit hunter game for 3DS.
So they still have competition. Especially in Japan, where all these 3 games are still pretty popular. They also still need to draw in the Western audience because people deem to believe it's going down hill (and with some designs, I agree)
