People (Misty in particular) rode him all the time about Charizard, and it finally culminated to him taking control of it in the Poliwrath episode. I'd consider that the most important thing to ever happened to him in the show, it's where he stopped being mentored by Misty and Brock, and came into his own. Darkrai/Latios ranks in at second though, at least he didn't lose to far weaker Pokemon like in Hoenn, Johto or Unova.
