The fact that all these digimon were so closely related, that one of the common as dirt mons could easily become another one of the existing villain digimon. Like using the Cherrymon example, the fact that it was just one stage below the Dark Master that was wrecking shit was just really weird.
And stuff like Demidevimon being in the same line as Myotismon (and Devimon, but that was kind of a given, even as a kid).
It's especially weird when you're so used to the linear evolutions of pokemon, and then you see these sprawling interconnecting flowcharts.
