wait, so how's this going to work? 5 friends, and only 3 starters.
are 2 of them going to start with non-starter pokemon? or are there going to be people with the same starter?

Well the first battle is a double battle. Honestly I have no idea. Pokebeach leaks say you only have 2 rivals, which im assuming are the orange haired kid and the other player character based on the personalities described.

most of dancebro's pokemon will probably be bipedal because dancing. or have some kind of movement that would be good for dancing.
shauna, serena, and calem all have starters. shauna's is strong against yours.
bowlcutbro probably has an N-thing going on where he uses pokemon around whatever town you fight him in since he's trying to complete the dex.

My theory is that they're not all there to battle you. You'd need 10 total rival battles just to give them all 2 battles, and then that's not really enough to call them rivals. I'm hoping the dancing guy is there to be a minigame rival.

This is how I see it:

The player character is getting a starter (duh).
From OP's image, I guess Shauna is getting a starter.
Serena/Calem issue a battle challenge in some images, so they are maybe the more competitive rivals. I would guess this means they will have the starter that's strong against yours based on past rivals.
In an image on Serebii, it looks like Serena/Calem and Shauna are the first people you meet, so perhaps they are your "real" rivals.
I don't know why Shauna is asking Tierno about the starters, but maybe he's the one who gives them to the newbies for the professor. If that's the case, he probably has his own pokemon already. I could picture him having something that can dance and/or has a quirky look.
Trevor has a pokedex already and is giving them out, which makes me think he has a pokemon, too. I wouldn't be surprised if they gave him a serious-looking pokemon, maybe electric or steel.

Speculation is fun.

I think it's likely they each will fill a different role.
Serena/Calem will want to battle you to see who's stronger
Shauna will be a friendly rival, à la Belle, who is interested more in experiences than getting stronger
Tierno will compete with you in some new contest-thing and be helpful elsewhere
Trevor will be the one urging you to catch more pokemon
That seems to cover all the bases: battles, exploration, fun, collection

You pick a Kalos starter
Calum/Serena picks the Kalos starter that beats your starter
Shauna picks the Kalos starter that's weak to your starter
Tierno picks the Kanto starter that beats your starter
and Trevor picks the Kanto starter that's the same type as your starter
You get the remaining Kanto starter during late-game

Yeah, this sounds pretty likely to me. Shauna is going to be like Bianca 2.0, just not as good, and the opposite gender protagonist will (hopefully) be what Brendan/May should have been in R/S/E.

Trevor will be an intellectual kind of rival, kind of like Cheren, while Tierno will be doing his own thing, probably teaming up with you more so than battling you.

Let's also not forget about the Professor, since he's supposed to battle you from time to time as well, and give you a Kanto starter at some point. I'd guess after you beat the champion.

If that's all correct, what do you think could cause your friendly rival, probably Shauna, to give you her starter at the end of the game?

I wonder if it will be as simple as she's given up battling or if it'll be some deeper reason. Maybe it isn't necessarily permanent, though, like Shuckie in GS. She could just give it to you to take care of while she's on a trip or going to school or something.

It seems like such a strange thing for a person to do.
