There is a pattern, odd generations = huge amount of new Pokémon, even generations = little amount of new pokemon (but new groundbreaking features)

Gen 6 is basically the new gen 2/4

It's more like, odd numbered Generations bring in new metagame features and even ones bring in new all-around features fixing what was wrong with the previous one.

Gen VI seems to be aiming for both.
