Check the wikipedia page for most animals and you'll find links to a bunch of sub species. In the image I've provided are six different types of otter, some look similar others are pretty unique. Only an idiot sees an animal already having a Pokémon counterpart as a problem with another being based on the same animal.

This is even stupider. There are already people calling the formula tried and tested with the same "catch Pokémon, battle, fight gyms, beat villain team, beat elite four" routine each generation. Wouldn't catching the same 151 Pokémon in different places get boring pretty quickly?
The reason we still enjoy the formula is that we're given new Pokémon to catch, new moves to use, new ways to battle and the occasional new type.
