I mean, yeah, it's easier to roll over everything instantly if you have a considerable level advantage, but even without that, you're not really in danger of losing any battles, at least until you make it to the Pokemon League, where there's a sudden large level gap between the Elite Four and other trainers. And even that shouldn't be a problem if you've just been battling every trainer and leveling up at a steady pace.
For the most part, the only challenging story mode fight in the entire series is probably Ghetsis and his illegal-as-fuck Hydreigon.
