Woah-ho-ho, friend, yes I did! Before I played Sapphire or even stadium, I would watch kids play RBY and even Green. I really was interested in them but never had the money, as I was a toddler. Once I started doing chores in 4th grade, however, I was able to buy Red version! I really enjoyed playing it on my TV screen thanks to my GBC to N64 adaptor thing. I was a little kid then and I did what mostly everyone else did and just used my starter through the game. It was highly enjoyable though! I still play it to this day and remember the good times.
Charizard was cool but I love Venusaur!
