ITT: We discuss Gen IV. Love it? Hate it? Why?

I've always fucking hated Diamond/Pearl, they nearly made me stop playing Pokémon altogether they were that bad, but a lot of people like those games, so I'd like to hear why. I'd rather talk about them than the Gen 2 remakes, because everyone seems to like those so I'm not sure there's all that much to debate.

Literally all I liked about Gen IV was the underground and Croagunk/Toxicroak.

Also, gen IV was great and got shittons of people back into Pokemon after the tragedy that was gen III, the REAL dark days of Pokemon.

Dawn fanatics creep me the fuck out. She is ten. Ten. Ten years old.

I spent more time playing Platinum than any other cart. Going back now, it has its problems and it's probably the last game I would recommend to someone trying to get back into pokemon, but I have fond memories of it and it helped me through some rough times.

Some of the evos to old pokemon they introduced were okay, a lot of them were terrible. I didn't hate the original pokemon they introduced in VI, there just weren't enough of them because the whole dex was basically additions to pre-existing evo families.

I liked a lot of the legendaries, but there were too many of them. Also I hate rotom. I know it's not a legendary, but it's event-only, so I lump it in.

Torterra was a great starter and is one of my favorite pokemon. The rest were meh.

I've never played Platinum, is it that much better than Diamond/Pearl? Do you think trying that one would redeem the experience?

The too many legendaries thing is one of my biggest complaint. Gen 5 had way too many too, but Gen 4 started the trend, and most of them are so forgettable. Especially the fucking legendary trio. They're all the same type, they all look the same and they're weak as shit, what IS the point of them? I loved the dogs, the birds and the regis, but fuck the lake trio. Genies in 5 were alright, but not great either. I hope Gen 6's legendary trio don't all look the same.

Like I said, I wasn't big into the games. I basically stopped playing Platinum after I beat the game. So I don't have an answer for that.

What I can tell you is that I fare very well with Yanmega in competitive OU, so I would think if you gave it the right moves like Bug Buzz, Air Slash, Giga Drain, and possibly Psychic, you would fare pretty well in-game.

Did a quick count, the number of new Pokemon introduced in IV that weren't legendaries or evolutions of older Pokemon was 64 (pure, original lines), the smallest amount of any generation, which was then spread out over the largest region in any of the games.

Suffice to say, it's not my favorite gen.

I liked it much better. I played Pearl, then Platinum later. However, I don't think it would totally redeem the game for you if you really hated D/P that much. I'd skip it unless you're really jonesing for something to play.

Anyway, what did you guys think about Gen IV's plot? It was more like science fiction than other Pokemon plots. A lot more far-fetched but I kind of liked it.

Gen IV in general was a step back in a lot of things.

That change is the sole thing that keeps Gen IV relevant and is overrated as fuck. Everything Gen 1/2/3 brought to the table was far more revolutionary and needed to keep the franchise afloat. It's not like the game would be unplayable if it wasn't for the split. Pokemon Emerald is still a great game to play despite the lack of the split.

Gen IV is what got me back into Pokemon hard after the debacle that was Gen III. I enjoyed the new battle mechanics(i.e. physical/special split), the new Pokemon were not too bad, and I liked the map and story. I wasn't crazy about most of the characters, but I had a great time with the game overall.

What put you off Gen III? I really liked it, but opinions seem to be very divided on /vp/.

I really wasn't a fan of most of the gen 4 pokemon, I found a lot of them very ugly with uninteresting concepts, and I HATED the starters. I still get mad if I'm forced to use the gen IV starters in a romhack. There were some good ones though- Drapion, Garchomp, Giratina and Toxicroak are pretty great.

A few years later I bought a used clam-shell DS and picked up Pearl, and then Platinum later.

I actually didn't play Gen III until after I played Black 1.

Well for Gen III, I hated the map (I'm a cartographer, and while I wasn't exactly one when Gen III came out, because I was only 15, I was always a cartophile, I always felt strongly about maps) mainly because it was half land and half water, and people will argue that that's sensible based on the Earth, but it isn't when you consider human habitation. That irked me from the beginning. Most of the pokemon weren't for me, either. Not saying they're bad, but I didn't like the design of the majority of new Pokemon, or their abilities, etc. The addition of abilities and the overhauling of the training system was interesting, but I was frustrated with it until Gen IV when I got a better feel for it, and that's more my fault, but it's still something that affected my opinion on the Gen.
As for Gen IV, Toxicroak was one of my favourite Pokemon designs since then. But I also loved Bronzong, Magnezone, Gliscor, Abomasnow, Lopunny, Drapion, Skuntank, etc.

I think everyone hates the water thing, but I really liked the Hoenn map other than that, I found the tropical setting really interesting and it made me want to explore. I think gen 3 was probably about 50/50 on pokemon I liked and pokemon I didn't, there were some pointless dickweeds (luvdisc, I'm looking at you) but there were SO many great grass-type, so with grass probably being my favourite type, I was pretty happy. Ludicolo is still a grade-A baller.

Let's see here.

First of the designs. Gen IV had a heavy case of Gen II syndrome, which is relying for a great part on earlier gen(s) pokemon for newer designs. It makes the gen feel uninspired, uncreative and unoriginal. Do you have any idea how many of the 107 pokemon introduced were (pr)evos of pokemon from earlier gens? 30, which makes up 28% of the roster.

Then there are the legendaries. Gen IV had a staggering amount of legendaries for a gen that only introduced 107 pokemon. Gen III was just on the edge, but Gen IV overdid it with almost doubling the amount that Gen III introduced and having almost as many legendaries as Gen 1/2/3 combined(15 vs 20). The status of being a legendary became a joke to me. They were pretty much handing them to everyone and I could hardly take them seriously Like I did before.

Now if you were to add both legendaries and (pr)evos together, they would make up 42%
of the pokemon roster. That's pretty bland, no matter which way you put it

Then there is the region. Sure this a subjective point and I admire GF for trying to experiment with a cold region, but the execution was terrible. The speed was very slow to start. Platinum did fix this to a degree, but I greatly missed how smooth everything went in Gen 3. And I hate how everyone complains about Hoenn being all water water, but seems to forget how Sinnoh was all mountainous, with terrible HMs to go with it. Defog was just flash outside of a cave, Rock Climb was just waterfall on land. Exploring the region was less fun thanks to snowy routes, marshlands and other environmental obstacles/hindrances.

Those are my two cents for now, but there are more (minor) things why I dislike Gen IV and put it in last place.

Gen IV pokemon-wise wasn't really that great but gave us some great evolutions for older pokemon. The 'new' Gen IV pokemon that aren't evolutions of older pokemon are really well, not very good. Gen V made up for that though.

Diamond and Pearl are the only games in the series that I can't force myself to play again, it's either Platinum or nothing. Around the time I was trekking through Mt. Coronet for the first time in DP was the closest I've ever came to actually quitting the franchise; I was legitimately forcing myself to complete it at that point.

The point of trios is to create a triangle of sorts, not to copy and paste the same Pokemon over and over.

The Kami-trio may be recoloured geniefags but at least they got some cool typings to make them differ from each other.

Funny, because I love gen 4 but gen 3 nearly killed my love for the franchise. In the end it's just opinions I guess, but I really love the ancient Pokémon lore, their creation story and all that. Each legendary had a clear back story that cemented their place in the creation, and I enjoyed how Team Galactic seemed harmless at first, until you realize their true goals. The music was easily the best in the series, imo. And I just restarted my Diamond to play through again yesterday.

They could have reduced the number of legendaries to an amount comparable to GS or RS, and not have lost any quality in the process. Having the least amount of new Pokemon lines sans legendaries of every generation spread over the largest region in any of the games is inexcusably bad design, something they really should have improved on by the fourth iteration of games.

Heatran has its place in the lore just fine.
The Darkrai-Cresselia combination has nothing wrong
The Lake Trio may have been a bit much but they all have their niche.
And the new non-legendary lines are still great.
Just because it isn't Rehash:The Generation or RS doesn't mean it's bad. In fact, it simply isn't bad design at all. Common Pokemon are what you'll encounter most now because the area is so large which means that finding a legendary, even wth the increased numbers, is still special.

I didn't really play Gen III and I enjoyed Gen IV a lot, since it got me back into playing Pokemon. I didn't really like Dawn at first, but she really grew on me because of the anime. Diamond and Pearl were okay, but Platinum was much better. I wouldn't play DP again though. HGSS was somewhat of a letdown to me, and I didn't want to go around playing through Johto again even though I spent a lot of time on GSC.

Because it'd make no sense to? Most of them aren't able to be caught until after you beat the game or through events, so they're of absolutely no use to you through the entirety of the story.

I usually rate how good a generation is by how much I get into the meta and the number of times I want to replay it.

Gen 4 I never replayed because going through the game was so boringly, painfully, slow that I had to wait until SS and HG to actually get into the meta. Doing 10 pokemon fights in 4 took the same amount of time as 30 or 40 in previous generations. It hurt to breath.

I don't like generation IV (diamond/pearl) because I did not enjoy playing it. I had to force myself to even finish. It was much more a chore then a fun game.

Heartgold and Soulsilver were perfectly enjoyable remakes, however.

This is ridiculous. Do you know how many legends and lore there are in the real world? Hundreds of thousands.
Mythology is the theme of the region, it makes sense that they'd feature that many. Besides that, many of those were small legends hidden away in random parts (Shaymin, Cresselia, Darkrai, Heatran, Manaphy), it's not like they all had plot importance or were thrown in your face.

Gen IV was actually probably my favorite generation, partly because it was the first generation I saw get unveiled as everything happened (from corocoro leaks, to the fake starters, and everything, basically) and I really just purely enjoyed the games in the generation as well.
The gym leaders were my favorites, the anime was honestly at one of its better points, and I really liked some of the pokemon (togekiss, lucario, etc) that were introduced in gen IV, not to mention HGSS. Overall I found it to be a really great Gen and I really loved it.

hgss isn't bad at all, and the only reason kanto feels empty I'd because you get almost the same amount of things to do but you blaze through it because you already have your HMs, a powerful trained team, and a good sense of where to go assuming you already played fr/lg

I didn't get R/S/E because I didn't like it. I didn't like the starters and I didn't like the appeal, I stopped watching the anime like right around that time too. Only watched like the first 6 episodes of the Advanced series, and then dropped it.

Didn't buy FR/LG, and instead I kind of just ignored Pokemon altogether. Later I saw D/P screenshots right up to its release, and for some reason, I had the urge to replay Pokemon again. The last one I had played was Silver on the GB. (And Pokemon XD, if you can count that one. So I knew some of the Gen 3 Pokemon. I got XD through a bundle.) I bought D/P and enjoyed it, it completely got me back into playing Pkmn again. Bought ever iteration after that. I even started rewatching the anime from the start of D/P all the way to the end.

I think rhyperior is my least favorite of every pokemon added to an evo family in another generation. Rhydon is such a great, classic pokemon design, and rhyperior is amorphous and just kind of... dumpy.
