The Gen 3 Legendaries (Kyogre/Groudon/Rayquaza) are good if you like dull, vague, lumpy shapes covered in spikes and lines. The Gen 4 Legendaries (Dialga, Palkia, Giratina) are just incomprehensible overdesigned messes, adding metal bands and stripes to the spikes and lines. The Gen 5 Legendaries (Zekrom, Reshiram, Kyurem) are good designs, but they're not that dynamic or interesting, and don't have much personality.
But these new legendaries - something about them really hits all the right notes. They've got that right balance of miminalism and complexity. They're designs are strongly driven by their concepts. They've got the perfect blend of majestic and idiosyncratic.
