Anon couldn't have known it as a kid, but in japan those two particular beetles are depicted as rivals or just connected in some way, so it could have been possible. When I first saw Espeon on a website banner I thought it was a Persian evolution.

And I STILL think it's bullshit there's not a little happiny in Blissey's pouch.

They're both based on beetles and they both get some fighting type attacks by level up. Didn't take much to convince me back then considering the whole Tyrogue line and Remoraid/Octillery barely look alike.
