There was very little about those generations that hasn't been done better by more recent generations. Maybe Gen2's extended quest, but the levels stayed in the 40s throughout it (already much easier than the Generation 1 endgame, and even worse since that was the same kinds of levels that the Elite Four had before you even get to the second set of badges) and far too many of Kanto's defining features, like Pokémon Tower and the Unknown Dungeon, were removed to fit it on the cartridge. The latter at least was partly fixed in the remakes, but Kanto was still just filler between fighting Lance and fighting Red, filler that didn't even leave the player within striking distance of Red's level at all, rendering it pointless. It was a good idea, and one I'd like to see revisited and done better in a future generation someday like future generations always do with past generations' ideas, but even the best unique idea of Gen2 was weakly executed in hindsight.
