So since WPM says Ash did not specifically remember the original Mewtwo, that's all it means. It's not one way or the other if he remembers it or not. Personally I think that if I saw Mewtwo again I would make mention of it, so IMO the writers are either retconning things or they just don't care to go off topic and explain about the old Mewtwo.
