Upwards of fourteen million people were tuning in each week during Kanto/Orange Islands to watch the show, something that has absolutely dwindled within recent years. They were clearly doing something right with the franchise then that they just aren't able to replicate now, especially with the anime.
If the anime has always been awful, even during the original series and Sinnoh, then so have the fucking games. People should stop acting like there's some huge gulf of quality between the two, they're both pretty much the same thing over and over and over again.
