I always tried to catch em all. But as a child, and still today, I would usually catch one new Pokemon for my team per badge, such that I would have 6 by the time I went for the 5th badge. (Starter, catch one new one before badge one, etc.) So I remember in Blue I wound up choosing Squirtle, catching Spearow before Brock, catching Bellsprout before Misty, trading Spearow for Farfetch'd and catching Drowzee before Surge, but then trading an Abra I had caught for Mr. Mime and using him on my team against Surge, Vulpix was captured next for use against Erica, and I caught a Gastly before Koga, but switched Gastly out for Lapras when it was gifted to me. I always trained them up to my team's level too. I find doing it that way makes the game feel really progressive, and gives you a fun team that you're not just fucking around with.
