So, new mini-sprites confirmed? Or is this another thing that only applies to Pikachu?

If they did make new ones for the old 649, I don't see why they didn't just do away with them and replace them with something that looks better.

Sure, they're fine, but if they were going through all the effort to redo them, they might as well have upgraded them to PMD-style portraits or something. They could have even used the 3D models so it would have been less effort and looked much better.

The 3ds's resolution is bigger, so if the old sprites were re used, they'd need to be stretched to be big enough. New sprites are, from a game design standpoint, as necessary as new font.
