Amphibian (as in the ones that live on land and sea; not the actual amphibians like frogs) ones like Squirtle or Corphish probably don't need to be in water constantly but others like Goldeen and Wailord certainly do.

In games, not so much either - after all - you can battle with water pokemon even outside water and in HG/SS you can even have water pokemon follow you outside the pokeball and outside the water.

But then again, some pokedex entries contradict it - for example Corsolas' pokedex entry says that in would die in polluted waters, which sort of implies that surface would not be good either-

But I guess for the sake of simplicity of the game mechanics - nobody cares about that.
Imagine going to Fire gym and you want to use your water pokemon and it just says "You are not in Water. Starmie fainted."

I don't think Corsolla dying in poluted water contradicts anything. A frog could die in polluted water but be perfectly fine outside of it.
I think we can consider water types pokemon to be like amphibians. They obviously can breathe air and don't suffer on land. It must not be too confortable for a fish pokémon, but they do just fine (see anime and games)

Fair point.

Another idea that comes to mind - basically much like almost all fire pokemon have their source of seemingly infinite fire, water pokemon (who can produce large quantities in instant - see HydroPump, water gun etc.) - maybe they have some source of "internal water" that keeps them alive.

Fresh water is just the term for river/lake/ non salt water.
It doesnt mean clean, just from a natural source that isnt the sea.

And it's not like GameFreak would expect people being autistic like us and caring about it.

Might want to look some pokedex entries up, of water pokemon to see whether it says something about salt water (like: This pokemon can live only in salt water) which would confirm it, but I have to go now so.. yeah
