As much as I love Gen 2, Ilex Forest is easily the worst. So it comes down to either Viridian or Eterna, and I'm leaning towards Eterna. And I hated Gen 4.

Just out of the pure nostalgia, I do not believe it is the best by any means, but I hold it the closest to me, as Gen 2 was my first Poke'mon game.

Ilex, both versions. There is something about that atmosphere.

Pinwheel might be the best though in an objective manner in terms of level design and direction.

I think by far the worst forest is petalburg. It's got nothing that striking about it that makes it stand out. don't get me wrong, Gen 3 is my favorite by far, but it is the weakest of all gens. All the other forests and routes have distinguishing features about them, while petalburg just feels like a rehash of the earlier routes. I think that spinwheel is the best forest so far, it just has such a cool atmosphere that many don't have, though Gen 4's forest is a close second. they both pull off a great feel, but spinwheel feels more deep, dark, and mysterious that makes you want to go deeper. I agree kind of, but Petalburg is the forest that feels the most like a forest to me IMO. I don't know why, it just feels that way.

Ilex would be the winner if they'd actually made a fucking Celebi event in Gen II and IV that didn't require some stupid event.

Pinwheel is the best. Eterna has nice atmosphere, but is ultimately just a straight line with a haunted house tacked on the side.

Anyways, discussing early forests is kind of dumb, since they are usually designed simply as early game areas.

Viridian is the worst. Weak pokémon, nothing to do, cut off in GSC, it sucks.
Petalburg is second worst, nothing to do but at least it has some items and rare pokémon, and pokémon that don't suck (shroomish, slakoth).
Ilex is in the middle since celebi and amazing headbutt dude.
Eterna is second best.
The winner is of course is Pinwheel, full of different ways and with great events both on BW and BW2.

Pinwheel kind of cheats being a little later in the came compared to other forests. The first 3 gens have them super early in the game and are just meant as babby's first dungeon.

Diamond/Pearl will be the new Red/Blue
HG/SS the new G/S
B/W/B2/W2 will be the only acceptable "old" Pokemon game to play

and Gen VI will be the best ever.

I liked petalburg even though it was the most annoying forest, I didn't enjoy having to do double battles right at the first forest I entered for Diamond and pearl, I enjoyed illex despite it bein so small, pinwheel was great for cottonee and petilil while viridian forest was just time consuming, so my order would be Petalurg>Pinwheel>illex>Viridian>Eterna
