Nothing. Being locked to tiles however, is restrictive. You can still have a tile based overworld and all the intended pros of them without being locked to the tiles. Yet, for whatever reason Game Freak decides to keep us restricted.

Feels alright. Would feel better if the world wasn't still done in right angles, though. Seeing shorelines in all those angles is a bit awkward, and moreso now that you can move in more than just 4 directions.

Well the game they had was probably heavily edited to only include the three new pokemon, had a default moveset, and was all around just a very basic demo of the game.

weh weh weh. they made a conscious decision to keep tiles over free movement to simplify programming and maintain some legacy with the older games. it affects you as a player almost zero, and it made their lives much easier, allowing effort to go into other aspects of actual gameplay. it's not like this is an FPS

How I interface with the game doesn't affect me now? And non-tile based movement exists since ever, I don't see why they can't move to it now that the moved to 3d.
