So I was there for gen1 as a kid and I've played through RBY probably 20 or so times, and Kanto in Gold version another 5 or 6 times, so I know it pretty well.
But I've never played FireRed/LeafGreen. So I've got myself a copy of LeafGreen and I thought I'd maybe just play it and let the nostalgia wash over me, but then I thought, why not challenge myself?
Now I know all about Nuzlocke, but it's never appealed to me. Mainly because it seems to involve a lot of grinding. I'm an adult. I don't have time for that. Maybe I could do a speed run? Nah, I want to be able to sit back and enjoy it. Considered monotypings etc. but that was too restrictive, so what I settled on, on a whim, was to see how far I can get WITHOUT VISITNG POKEMON CENTERS. Not even once. And that includes talking to your mom and (I think you can avoid it?) stepping into the purifying square in Lavender tower.
In the remakes, Pokemon are healed and restored when deposited into the pc, too, so I had to add one extra stipulation: NO USE OF THE PC. Your team of six is all you have. If you want to catch a new mon you have to let one go for good. (Of course, as in Nuzlocke, if there's a something particularly good, I will allow myself to permanently box it for when after the challenge ends.)
My main problem is PP. And I'm constantly strapped for cash. This is the kind of challenge I hoped it would be, because grinding is practically prohibited. I cannot afford to waste health on wild mons when you're not getting money from them to buy potions, and PP is too sacred. I have to go back to previous save points several times when I realize my strategies are going to fail and reorganize how I'm going to tackle the big battles until I manage to break through with my low-level, low-PP team.
Because of not being able to use those free and important tools offered to every trainer, I'm calling this OUTLAW MODE. It's as though I have been ousted from society and all I have is my roving gang of Pokemon.
