okay, look here faggots, apparently some of you idiots don't understand how pronunciation works, so this thread is for you
to learn how to pronounce a pokemon's name, there are 2 things you need
1: the ability to read. you will never be able to understand pokemon names if you can't fucking read, for instance, Phanpy
look at the word.
analyze the letters very carefully
let's do this step by step
PH, okay, simple enough, those of you who are not mentally retarded know that you pronounce PH as an F, easy
A makes it's short sound because there are no accents or Es afterwards
N makes the only sound it can make without an accent
and the last two
P makes it's usual sound, and Y makes it's short sound
so, put it all together, we get Fanpi, congratulations VP, we learned the name of a pokemon!
now, sometimes this method alone isn't enough to figure out the pronunciation, pic related
now in cases like these, our second necessity comes into play
2: Having a goddamned vocabulary
the vast majority of pokemon names are simply a combination of 2 or 3 words, so it follows that if we know how to pronounce the words that make up a pokemon's name, we can pronounce the name, no?
some easy examples are
SLOWKING: a combination of "Slow" and "King"
POLIWRATH: a combination of "Polliwog" and "Wrath"
CROCONAW: a combination of "Crocodile" and "Gnaw"
so, to take some examples that some of y'all seem to have trouble with
MANTINE: a combination of the words "Manta" and "Marine"
HOUNDOUR: a combination of the words "Hound" and "Dour"
SIGILYPH: a combination of the words "Sigil" and "Glyph"
PATRAT: a combination of the words "Patrol" and "Rat"
any questions?
