So why did GameFreak change the names of Pokemon for overseas release? The Pokemon had such badass names in the original Japanese.

This guy's name is supposed to be fucking Kamex. That sounds tough as shit.

Seriously the English names just sound so underwhelming compared to the ones in Japanese.

To be honest, the only franchise I've ever seen where the names are better in the western version than the Japanese version is Pokemon. Literally every single name is better. Even Talonflame.

Because Kamex is from the japanese word kame for turtle, the name is lost on an english audience, 'badass' or not.

Some other names I think they should have kept, and others should have changed (I'm looking at you, pachirisu)

Most of the time when it's not things like Fire or Blacky or Boober, they're just random sounds. I mean, Gihukimaru sounds a lot different from Kagushi, but since it's so detached from the kinds of things we're used to hearing, it'd all just sound the same.

None of their names would be appealing and it'd be impossible to remember them.

Fun fact, nomenclature evolves I've time as people use it and adapt it to accents, it's literally the reason why Latin is a dead language but there's so man languages based off of it.
Tortoise used to be pronounced "TOOr-Toe-ees" but it's much easier to say "TOOr-tus" so that's how it goes. However the "tois" still is pronounced toe-ees, and so when you tag it onto 'blast' you don't get "Blast-Us" you get "Blast-Oe-ees"
