The battle may have been bullshit but that is to be expected of a Pokemon League tournament, lots of high level fully evolved Pokemon, legendary Pokemon everywhere, and things should get very hard towards the quarter finals and up.Ash should have known it's not the Cute Cuddly league tournament.

Think of it in terms of Pokemon Stadium

You have several levels at which you can battle at like this:
Petit Cup
Pika Cup
Poké Cup
Prime Cup
Each cup (or class) has certain levels at which to battle at. So instead of feeding Ash to the wolves of an open class tournament like the tv series, he should battle at lower levels and work from there.

Levels don't exist in the anime, which is why not evolved Pokémon can stand up against fully evolved Pokémon. Pikachu almost single handedly took care of Latios.

Pikachu could hold his owner but his trainer sucks and the average sum of his team is still lower than most trainers in the tournaments. In an ideal world a lower class tournament would be better, I understand the tv series and the games do not concur with each other.
