The tools have gotten far more varied, but Masuda's first two gens of work would surely beat out anything an amateur could produce with current technology. Not to mention that the point of contention wasn't on which you prefer, but how he described 8-bit music in general; it's all completely subjective.
And if we're talking about unique pieces with incredibly high quality, I'm not even sure why /vp/ would be the board you'd choose to converse about it on. The music in this series has always been said to be bland and simplistic by critics, and just by listening to soundtracks of other franchises on either consoles or PC, it very much is by comparison. Yet many of us strangely enjoy it over the soundtracks of many other games.
