Is it really at all surprising, in a world where stasis-inducing capture devices, teleportation, fossil-reanimation, and other advanced technologies exist, not to mention the implicit understanding that some Pokemon literally represent an extraterrestrial intelligence?

With the introduction of non-Japan inspired regions, the revelation in BW2 that Unova may be connected to Sinnoh gives rise to the notion that the Pokemon world is not actually a facsimile of Earth, and is in fact a human-colonized planet where Pokemon are the native creatures.

The series has all the ability to go full sci-fi, and could be pretty sweet.

I'm not familiar with all the instances of ancient human civilizations in the series, but most, if not all, seem to be found in the anime and films, a separate canon from the games where real-world locations have actually been mentioned.

They're mentions of ancient civilizations in the games too. There are ruins and stuff, stories of ancient times in books and npc speeches, etc.

Maybe it's like the Pern series? The planet got colonized by some space ships traveling to the butt-end of the galaxy, and then shit happened and hundreds of years later its a more antiquated society of it's own. (I can't imagine the havoc that would wreak on future Pern scientists trying to figure out where humans came from)

maybe it could be sort of an atlantis kind of thing, where the ancient civilization got ruined for some reason, and all their highly advanced technology and research dissapeared, only a few people survived and started rebuilding everything again.

That's not possible though. Humans couldn't survive at the depth those tunnels would have to be. Besides, Peru and Canada are connected by land making it slightly more believable while New York and Japan are separated by an ocean. Also, I do go on /x/.

Who's to say that it's necessarily connected to Sinnoh via means we'd know from conventional geology?

We do seem to see warping / possible wormholes via tech, and see mons capable of exhibiting such phenomena. In a world where psychics and empaths skulk around in broad daylight and there's portals to other dimensions, who's to say there can't be natural wormholes?

That doesn't mean it's physically connected to Sinnoh. The Sinjoh ruins in Heart Gold Soul Silver are similarly connected to Sinnoh. The 'connection to Sinnoh' is written to imply background story on why the emotion trio would show up there.
