I got in the habit of holding down A as it's thrown, and then when it closes, pressing and holding down B also. Not sure when it started, but I've been doing it for years.

I can never break this habit. In all the games I always hold Up and A when the ball goes out, and then tap B repeatedly when the Pokemon goes in. And it works for me. I've constantly tested it and I just can't get over it. Same whenever I tap A when my Pokemon attacks and B when the opponent does. I'm paranoid.
