The only other character to ever really accomplish their goal was Gary. He successfully became a researcher. Everyone else is doomed for failure. I guess Misty and Iris could technically accomplish their goal, because all they really needed/need to do is become a gym leader.

Like how Dawn after the Wallace Cup became literally Ash 2.0 and May was unendearing as fuck without Drew and Harley around? I would've rather seen Dawn and Scrappy-Doo incarnate Piplup fade to the background somewhat than shoved in our faces constantly, and even then, they gave Misty and Iris a huge win over the protagonist in both of their respective series.

Dawn, Iris and Cilan are catchphrase-spouting fags whos sole purposes on the show were to annoy the ever-living fuck out of anybody who's watched the show for longer than a few seasons. Misty was the tsundere badass chick who warmed up to Ash after Togepi brough out the motherly instinct in her, and May was the career-oriented girl who the protagonist mentored; why they felt the need to rehash both of them in DP and BW is baffling.

The anime has always been for marketing purposes. Their main purpose is to sell merchandise to kids and introduce them to the Pokemon franchise. So they don't have the time to cater to older fans.

For what? She has nothing to advertise now, if they were to spring for popular past characters to advertise new 'mons, there's literally no reason they'd choose her over Misty or Brock, especially since the oldest fans are almost the main demographic purchasing the games at this point and could be lured back in by doing something so sensationally pandering towards them.

But all of that is pretty irrelevant, because they're almost certainly not bringing back anybody.

I think the writers were throwing darts at a wall when it came to Iris. She wants to be a "Dragon Master"? Oh, I know...let's make her starter a Driburr and have her catch an utterly pointless Emolga. Oh, Axew hasn't evolved? Here's a Dragonite.

It's stuff like this, and Ash's handling that makes you realize that the writers are uninspired and can't really be bothered to write for shit.

Though, hey some people love her because she's "different". Though the writing behind her is quite terrible, just like everything in BW.

Pikachu also had Iron Tail, which was super effective against Onix. What could it do against Morrison's and Jasmine's Steelix? Nothing, and it got slaughtered. It at least put up a fight against Excadrill, but given it had no answer for anything it was obvious it was going to lose.

Just like as soon as Psyduck came out, it was like welp the writers obviously want Misty to win. Yep

There's a reason why Pikachu got butchered by Katie's Dugtrio, and Ash didn't use Pikachu against Clay. Implying that Pikachu is effective against ground types using examples from the very first season doesn't really help your argument.

And unfortunately...this is why we keep seeing ridiculous uses of the Pokedex.

Off the top of my head we have recently seen Ash scan Koffing (he had to deal with the one James had in Kanto how many times?), Dawn's Piplup, and a Charmander (soon before getting Charizard's Pokeball).

Though I'll admit that Gary did have some actual character development throughout the original series. Starting out as a total showboating egomaniac just lording his success over Ash and teasing him, to eventually becoming more friendly and mellowing out until he decided to become a researcher.

And for the record May was the best handled travel companion, as she was handled better than Misty was and her personality and character interaction was more enjoyable than Dawn's.
