How did this game turn out so bad?
I don't own it myself, but I thought of getting it before I saw how panned it got by reviewers. Would any of the owners here say this game is worth getting or should I get myself something that's actually worth my money?

I bought it as a filler until X and Y, and it's not bad. It just has slow text (that you can't speed up) and is very repetitive.

Aside from the core gameplay which was never that good in PMD to begin with, it's the best pokemon game ever made. They finally made good use of 3d models, excellent soundtrack and the only good story pokemon has ever done to date (at the cost of being very wall-of-text)

What could possibly compel me to buy a Pokemon game that's missing this many Pokemon?

It seems like a lot of easy gameplay they just sort of left out. Was is due to size limitations, time constraints, or laziness that they released a game like this with such a huge glaring flaw?

I wasn't trying to say it was the best pokemon game ever made - mediocre game play prevented that from happening, but it was the kind of everything else. As for EoS's story, it was slaughtered by the partner who I would never befriend. The first second and last special episodes were excellent though.

The fact that the majority of them aren't even worth playing as and/or they weren't needed because they've got Pokemon available that make good replacements

It has its flaws but in my opinion it's the only one worth playing.

I'd say it's worth it. Since I like roguelikes, it is actually my second favorite Pokemon game overall to date.

It had a nice story (No unexplained deus Ex machinimas this time.), had great music, it looks beautiful, and I quite like some of the characters, especially Emolga.

It was shorter than previous installments, but makes up for it with a Tychoon-like construction aspect where you can build farms, shops, minigames, dojos and a few other things in a place that starts out desolate with supplies you get on missions.

Honestly, it got smashed by reviewers because they don't like roguelikes, and smashed by mystery dungeon fans because they removed some things that made the game more difficult. (Though there are still hellishly hard challanges if you are up for them, they just aren't mandatory.)

Some will argue the game as bad, but I genuinely enjoyed the hell out of it.

Absolutely. Before the special episode, I never really cared that much for the generic Dusknoir or the stoic Grovyle, but the episode really fleshed them out for me and made them care for them, not to mention it revisited the post-apocolyptic future, by far my favorite setting in Explorers (inb4 edgy)

Where the partner felt apprehensive about wishing 'you' back given the consequences. He was by far my favourite PMD partner before this, and that scene really made the artificial friendship have substance to it. Hell, I thought delaying 'your' return to the pokemon world was a very smart move; gave the ending far more sticking power. Also, there's no bullshit like aegis cave, but quantity has a quality of it's own to it, I'd never deny that

Especially how they even had a popup after the game finished saying that you would play as your partner from then on... Or when you finally get to the world core, where you can actually choose to not return. (No fake choice there... Damn.)

To be fair, they did add a lot more than they removed. And the amount of Pokemon in the game is large enough to not notice that most are missing until you start looking for some individual ones. It's like how not all Pokemon are catchable in the first iteration of any main series games, and most don't even appear until postgame.

Gen IV had 493 Pokemon.
Gates had 144 Pokemon.
You notice VERY fast the all the dungeons have the same groups of pokemon
I liked Gates just fine, but don't try to sugarcoat the crappy selection. I just wanted my Gallade ;_;

That's not quite what I meant anon...

I'm not talking Pokemon alone, but rather content in general... They added an entire tychoon game with building, leveling, and expanding paradise. They added minigames, and move leveling. They added multiplayer and fancy boss fights. Even the cutscenes were improved immensely.

Then again, I suppose I can ignore the lack of Pokemon more than you because my favorite is actually in the game. (Pichu)

Paradise building was fine, but very tedious. You often had to go mow down lvl. 5 Thug Cubchoo for your two Sexy Planks. The minigames were sort of pointless. I do agree with the move leveling, and the multiplayer was decent (if you had friends). The boss fights were no better than the prior boss fights. Cutscenes were hardly important.

Aye, I hear ya. In the end, I had way more high-end materials than simple ones. So I ended up doing murder runs where I'd take a few teammates, set them all to "Go the other way", and just ran to the exit as fast as I could while my teammates murdered everything they saw and collected treasure chests.
