Why WOULDN'T they do this? The hat has always been the trademark of a player character, and one of your rivals is literally the opposite gender without a hat to designate that they aren't the player.

Not saying anything about how good of an idea it is or not, but it's pretty fucking stupid to assume they'll let you take it off.

A fifth of the new Pokémon revealed so far are fairies. They already have an entire egg group. Fucking Marill of all things is a Fairy-type, and there are a ton of existing Pokémon that fit the type way more than that. I wouldn't be surprised if fairies outnumber dragons and ghosts; hell, I'd be surprised if they didn't.

Also the idea of Team Flare is definitely Team Rocket-esque, which will probably be a story downgrade unless GF pulls a 180 on them and actually makes them do something you can make a story out of besides 'stop the bad guys'.

That's not the player character. In those screenshots the player character is the boy. She's just the rival, and it's apparent that the rival doesn't wear hats.

I do hope we can take the hat off though. Ponytail Serena is a cutie.

I mean picture this. You cross Route 4. You fight a breeder. She has a Lv 16 Drilbur. You defeat her. She gives you money with the promise of a rematch

And then you complete your Unova run. You are the champion, the strongest trainer in yur region, your pokémon levels are high, you met so many of those special critters

And then you go back to ROute 4 for nostalgia. And she comes along with her Drilbur that somehow didn't gain a single level. She licks her lips and shouts

Even if the story won't be BW-tier, I doubt they'll cast away the level of characterization they became accustomed to implementing from it.

They hit the right pitch and it'd be a waste if it became as flat as the pre-DS games.

I'm not defending what they did with the RSE Rivals. However, I am defending the concept of using the opposite gender protag as a rival.

I'd rather have that than some other character like they did with every other game. I remember feeling really disappointed that Lucas/Dawn didn't actually amount to anything other than cheering you on and battling alongside you a few times. I really wanted them to become a challenging, yet friendly rival while the competitive rival (a la Blue/Silver) was an absolute snob/jerk that was an entirely different character, not one of the possible protags.

What are you talking about? Being Lazy is designing an entire character and not doing anything with them. It's just a waste to make an entire counterpart to one character and then just do NOTHING with them.

They are the one NPC that actually has a chance to connect with you, because they are called "your COUNTERPART" for a reason. If the game DOESN'T use them it's going to be blander than if it didn't, at any rate.

Again, that's why there should be two rivals, one friendly counterpart and one competitive jerk that's not one of the two protagonists.

You think it's lazy to not design another character? Reusing assets in the game files (like the models for the other protagonist) is just plain being SMART, not lazy.

Besides, even then it gives a nice opportunity to give each character a "canon" personality, instead of letting them just be some ambiguous NPC with a personality that's forever relegated to speculation and obscurity.

When they try to make them their own characters, they come out as bland blank slates. This is because they can also potentially be the silent protagonist, and they don't want to give them any interesting attributes that a player wouldn't like.

Just make a new character model. The protagonist models should be used for the player.

I don't think that May/Brendan was a bland blank slate as much as you'd like to think.

They made some mistakes indeed, but that's nothing they can't learn from.

Give them more encounters, a more challenging team, a bit more interesting dialogue and I really think May/Brendan is the perfect rival. I much enjoyed them over what they did for DPPt/BW1/BW2 (with the exceptions of Barry, some of Bianca, and Hugh's more casual relationship with the player)

I don't know, I sort of agree with the other guy. I honestly don't think I would have liked if Bianca was Hilda if you picked Hilbert, or Hilbert if you picked Hilda. They balanced the two rivals just fine, and they gave them appearances that complimented their personalities. Protagonists are designed with the player in mind, not to be an NPC.
